Open Day Update

With less than 7 days to go until the big re-opening we have been very busy trying to get everything ready.  The walls in the main library have been repainted and the computers have been upgraded and preparations are well underway for the grand re-opening on Saturday 6th April from 930am-430pm.

  • Best Selling Author Sheila Quigley has confirmed she will be opening the library
  • Spectacular Bunting has been provided with over 300 designs of favourite book characters and books from the pupils of Whitburn Primary and Marsden Primary
  •  The Easter Bunny has hidden carrots around the library for children to find to win a prize
  • There is a carrot quiz for older children, with clues around the library to find
  • Live music has been confirmed
  • A display of local talent
  • Childrens crafts
  • Refreshments
  • We are also keeping a few surprises up our sleeves for you to come down and see for yourselves!

Of course, the most important part of the library is still the books.  The volunteers will be getting formal training next week and the extended hours on the 6th of April provides added opportunities to return and check out books as normal

Thanks to Durham Benevolence Fund

Many thanks to the Durham Benevolence Fund, who have kindly provided us with a grant to help with the building works that have taken place in the library.

See below our secretary Marilyn Harding being handed a cheque from Master Carl Baker. We have been awarded £500 from the Durham Benevolence Fund, which has been matched by Hedworth Masonic Lodge which gives a total of £1000 towards the renovation works we are currently undertaking.

There is now a functioning accessible public toilet within the library. We are also upgrading the computer facilities and redecorating the interior of the building to give a fresh new look

Keys to success

We now have the keys to our library!

Many thanks to all of the trustees and volunteers that have helped us to get to this stage and many thanks to South Tyneside Council for organising the installation of a brand new accessible toilet for the library.

The next two weeks are going to be tough as we redecorate the library, upgrade all of the computers and set up ready for the open day on Saturday 6th April.  If you have some time and a paintbrush, come along and help us. We will also have some books that will need putting back onto shelves.  Email for more details if you can help.

The open day is fast approaching and we currently have many exciting things to show off the talents of our community and keep the children entertained over Easter.  We have a carrot trail, a quiz and craft activities for the children as well as the most spectacular bunting consisting of over 400 pictures created by the pupils at Marsden Primary and Whitburn Primary that depict their favourite stories.  As well as this, for the adults we have bestselling author Sheila Quigley coming to open the library and sign some of her books.  There will be an exhibition of local talent including photos, artwork and poetry and live music.   More information to follow…

Library transfer almost complete

The Lease has now been signed and we are due to take over the library on Friday 8th March 2019.  World Book Day 2019 will mark the final day of Whitburn Library being operated by South Tyneside Council.

Unfortunately there will be a short period of closure between 8th March and 5th April to enable a new accessible toilet to be fitted and the movement of the current kitchen facilities to a more accessible place to allow room spaces for public or private hire.  Rest assured we will not be reducing the book stock or range of books available and all community activities such as Baby Bounce, Story Tots and Knit and Natter will resume under the operation of Friends of Whitburn Library from Saturday 6th April.

We will mark this new chapter with an open day on Saturday 6th April, save the date as we have exciting activities planned.  Check back soon for more information.  We will also be performing various activities over the Easter holidays from Monday 8th April, again more information will follow!

If you want to get involved and help with some of the redecoration or are interested in volunteering, please email us at

Christmas fundraiser

Many thanks to everyone for your support. We have had many donations to help raise some vital funds for the library. We were able to host ‘make and take’ craft activities for the children. The ‘make your own snowglobe’ was very popular, as were the Christmas plates.

As well as the crafts we had lollipop angels, table runners, lavender bags and cloths, Christmas decorations and much more. In total we raised £400 for the charity
