Successful Open Day

Many thanks to all the volunteers that made our open day so successful.  It really was a fantastic day with something for everyone. It was so interesting we had coverage in both the Sunderland Echo and on BBC Look North!

Many thanks to Sheila Quigley for cutting the ribbon, opening the library and signing books.

We have a poem of thanks below written by trustee Richard Day, which sums up the day with some videos highlighting some of the excellent talent that was on display that we have on our doorstep here in Whitburn:

A great big thank you to you all

We asked, you came, you met our call

For the splendid pies and scones and cakes

That warm hearted floury fingers baked

For the brightness of the Acopela group

Sing along, swing along, smiles, join in –

For Bill’s musicians too, the style they did bring

“La Vie en Rose” beautifully sung.

To all the artists, poets, young and old

“A” level art with their colours bold

To Bryony and her carrot fair

Children’s whistles and the pair

Of young girls who joined the band

Gently whistling, a priceless find!

And to those who worked behind the scenes

And to the ladies who served the tea

A thank you all those to the opening came

Making it a moment to remember

Pity we can’t do it again!

The event saw about 210 people come through the door and raised an important £367.95.  Thank you everyone!

Open Day Update

With less than 7 days to go until the big re-opening we have been very busy trying to get everything ready.  The walls in the main library have been repainted and the computers have been upgraded and preparations are well underway for the grand re-opening on Saturday 6th April from 930am-430pm.

  • Best Selling Author Sheila Quigley has confirmed she will be opening the library
  • Spectacular Bunting has been provided with over 300 designs of favourite book characters and books from the pupils of Whitburn Primary and Marsden Primary
  •  The Easter Bunny has hidden carrots around the library for children to find to win a prize
  • There is a carrot quiz for older children, with clues around the library to find
  • Live music has been confirmed
  • A display of local talent
  • Childrens crafts
  • Refreshments
  • We are also keeping a few surprises up our sleeves for you to come down and see for yourselves!

Of course, the most important part of the library is still the books.  The volunteers will be getting formal training next week and the extended hours on the 6th of April provides added opportunities to return and check out books as normal
