Library Photo Wall

Have you got an old photo of Whitburn

Can we borrow it to put on the library wall to showcase our village?

We can copy it if you don’t want us to borrow it

You can give it to a member of staff or email it to us at

We are reopening… Again!

Following the second closure of Whitburn library in as many years we are looking forward to re-opening the library for a second time.  There will be less of a ‘grand re-opening’ this time to enable a responsible re-opening due to the current pandemic situation.

There will be changes as a result of Covid-19 to ensure the safety of our library users and the library volunteers and to ensure we are complying with the government guidelines.  The following changes will be made to keep everyone safe:

  • A one way system around the library
  • Limited number of users in the library at any one time
  • Face coverings should be worn while within the library
  • Screens will be in place to protect library volunteers
  • Details will be taken to comply with the ‘track and trace’ system
  • Books will be held for 72 hours after return to ensure they are virus free prior to being available for re-issue

Our social groups and computers will remain closed for the time being, but we are working on getting things back to as normal as possible as soon as is practically possible.

If you wish to borrow or return books we are here to help, but please bear with us during these unprecedented times and be patient!

Summer Reading Challenge

Although normality seems like a long way off, we are trying our best to keep little minds active over the summer and helping encourage them to enjoy the benefits of reading.

This year it is mainly online, however Whitburn Library is there to support your reading and provide the reading material necessary to complete the challenge.  We hope to open again soon, however in the meantime, we have lucky dip parcels of children’s books marked with rough age group and are offering a ‘select and collect’ or home delivery service from the library, just contact us on 0191 529 3098 or at for more information.  These services are available to all registered library users.  We have procedures in place to ensure that books and packages are virus free and if in doubts, please leave the package for 72 hours before opening.

The WEA are offering free online courses.  There is something for everyone this summer – if you cant get out to learn something new, stay in and do it from the comfort of your own home

It is with regret that the library will be closing temporarily from Saturday 21st March until further notice.  This action has been taken to protect the health and safety of our volunteers, visitors and valued members of the community and to reduce the possible transmission of the coronavirus.

If you wish to borrow any books our library will be open to issue books:

Thursday 19th March; 0930 – 1230 and 1330-1900

Friday 20th March: 0930 – 1230 and 1330-1700

Saturday 21st March: 0930 – 1200

In order to support the most vulnerable in the community that have been asked to spend a prolonged period in self-isolation, we are looking to trial a delivery service.  If you would like books delivered to your home please contact the library via email at  Alternatively, telephone the library on Tuesday between 1000 and 1200 on 0191 5293098
